Black Hole Touch and Go

The Explorer’s Barber

We’ll call this one the Explorer’s Barber. Nothing gives you a razor close shave like the event horizon of a black hole…

Based on the results of our poll from 9/15/2021, the viewers wanted Ardent Dream to visit a black hole. Aiming to please we did so, and boy was it a close thing!

I didn’t HAVE to pilot the Dream in so close, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I suppose this would be my “Here, hold my beer,” moment so far. Not counting the escape from George Washington’s Nose World, but that’s a different story.

Here’s how the Explorer’s Barber encounter went, as it happened:

The Atdent Dream attempts a touch and go with a block hole!

Son of Explorer’s Barber

And as if THAT wasn’t enough, I later had a bit a close encounter with a faction facility in the same system. Call this Son of Explorer’s Barber.

FSD exit close call!

As you can see, exploration in Elite: Dangerous DOES have risks, and it’s made worse for the fact if you lose your ship before you turn in all of your exploration data and samples you lose all of that work. Poof, gone, done. For explorers on long leg flights that last real-time months this is a stress point. Many work around it by just not thinking about it. If you did, you’d be so risk averse that you’d never do anything interesting.

Art imitates life, after all.

But with the continued support of our viewers who, hopefully, take some time to support our charities, the Ardent Dream’s voyages will continue so long as there are things to see and a ship to see them with.
